Hair tips and trends for the holiday season.

So, you think the "up do" is easy? A couple of bobby pins, a curling iron, over a little black dress and suddenly you too are Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany's. Ha! Except you look in the mirror and see hockey-mom-esque; Sarah Palin instead!

First off, "up do's" are something you assume never go out of style. And while the concept doesn't, there are fads that you must stay on top of, such as ie. Ivanna Trump's "up do" of the late eighties - not good. The "up do" you wore with your prom dress, also - not good! So what is there to "do" with "hair for the holiday's" ?

I put my "holiday hair" questions to Jimmy Lapointe of Axis Salon in Vancouver and the 4th place finish in Superstar Hair Challenge (season one).

M.D. What is new for hair this holiday season?
J.L. Trends for this holiday season: simple clean pulled back hair with lots of detail in the back, or big, soft and loose, either way put down the straightening iron. Finally! Color tends to be dark and rich for a conservative look and wildly red for the fashion forward glamour girls. (I'd stick with one or the other:
fashion forward or glamour girls)

M.D. Is there a trick to the "up do" and can I do it myself?
J.L. The trick to doing a quick office to evening up-do hair is curls: big soft curls to will give your hair a nice movement to your hair during the day and with a few pins you can pull the hair back softly into a loose bun for evening. Also, for the very fashion forward, braids on the side or in the bangs for a beautiful accent in the hair.

M.D. Why is an "up do" a timeless classic, like the "little black dress"?
J.L.. You can't beat an "up do" for the holiday's. Styled hair always will always look finished for a night out. A nice up-do completes a "little black dress" because both are classics and are reliable fashion friends for every woman. Each decade has it's own take on the "up do" and the "LBD" and each season has it's own take on the style, but the classic styles can't be beat.

Is all this talk about "up do's" and "little black dresses" leaving you bored and craving for adventure in holiday wear? Do you feel hemmed in by 1950's conventions on formal dressing and hairstyles? Do you want your personality to show through to your office buddies? If you answered yes, than you are walking on the fine line between fashion and fashion victim! Have fun, don't look fun. If you want to be known for your personality, take a dance class, or pick up an etiquette book and read the chapter on "conversations at social events", anything accept except experimenting with your hair for fun.

Yes your appearance is what makes the first impression when you walk into a room, but this does not mean it should not be used as a visual shorthand to convey your zany personality at a formal event -that's what interaction is for. No matter how much you say or want to believe you dress only to please yourself, your appearance tells the world a lot about you. Make sure it's not so much that you end up standing alone by the punch bowl all night.

Looking as though you've resorted to desperate tactics.
Put the tiara down!!

No one likes to look at -or live with- some one who has an air of "crazy" about them and they certainly don't promote them.
